Copyright refers to the protections of one's works and intellectual property. Copyright can be applied to any piece of work a person creates and have a copyright symbol applied to it. A copyright can be obtained legally, with the copyright symbol, or through a separate Collective Commons license. The Collective Commons license is like a copyright in the ownership of intellectual property, but it also specifies how the author allows it to be used. This can be specification like use only with attribution, only with non-profits, or with no changes to the original work. Fair use is similar to copyright, but it refers to what and how much of a piece of work is being used. Fair use applies to nonprofit or educational purposes. The amount of the piece of work depends on the creator and how the use will affect the creator. I had no idea that fair use was a thing or you could get a Collective Commons license, so this is really interesting. I plan on teaching elementary school, so I don't know how much I will be able to talk about this specifically, but I will definitely be teaching about not using other people's stuff without their permission, being aware of your online presence, and using stuff on the internet can still be considered stealing.
I think academic dishonesty is getting easier and more accessible for younger generations with AI, so stressing the importance of personal knowledge and growth is important in the classroom. Also using just paper work, AI detectors, and getting familiar with my students' writing styles will be key in fighting academic dishonesty. I also think I won't have the strictest policy on late work when the child has communicated their concerns, so there would be no need to rush assignments or cheat on a friend's homework. With the lack of productivity, I would mainly combat this creating very engaging assignments. By using a mixture of hands on and technological assignments, hopefully my students will be excited about the work I am assignments. I also restricting phone access in the classroom is important to keep the attention of the students.
About the newsletter, I ended up really struggling with word. Every time I entered a picture, it would completely change the orientation of my newsletter. I tried to incorporate different colors and shaded boxes so that it would look interesting, but I am worried that the actual content wasn't functional. I did, however, get the hang of making text boxes, shaded sections, and changing the aesthetics. For next time I think I could improve the columns. The first page looks a little wonky because I wanted to include the pumpkin pictures. For elementary school I could be required to send out a newsletter to the families, so this is very applicable for my future. Learning word is definitely a difficult learning curve, but I will get there.
