Blog Post #1

As a freshman, I have very little experience with technology in the context of teaching. I have only ever been on the receiving end of the educational tools, so I hope to acquire skills that I will be able to use in the classroom with my future students. I also struggle with technology literacy, so I hope to become more confident in technological tools.

In the classroom, I only used Google Suite, Canvas, Kahoot, and Flipgrid. My knowledge of technology in an educational setting is very limited. Like my previous teachers, I had always preferred paper/tangible tools in the classroom, so this is very new.

I do already have some existing personal learning networks related to teaching. My parents are a huge part of my learning and value system. I can attribute so much of who I am and what I know to their parenting styles and love for me. In addition to what they have done for me growing up, they are also educators. I got a first-hand perspective on the effort, frustrations, and rewards that come with being a teacher. So, they are a large part of my learning network moving forward into this profession. My network also consists of previous teachers that I have bonded with so much, both in teaching style and personal character. I have a lot of previous work experience at summer camps, babysitting programs, customer service jobs, and non-profit organizations, so I have learned how to exist in a professional workplace with customers and children. Some resources that I use to aid my learning needs include Google, YouTube, Khan Academy, and my peers. I am an auditory and visual learner, so I usually seek help from other people that I can get help from in-person.

Some things about me, not related to teaching, include the fact that I was in band in high school. I played the trumpet and was the drum major of the band my senior year. I also play lacrosse and was the lacrosse captain my senior year of high school. I love arts and crafts and have recently been enjoying making bracelets and necklaces. I am a huge coffee drinker and my favorite is an iced mocha. My dream college job would be a coffee shop barista.

  1. Hi Hope! I love that you want to learn the opposite side of things, as those skills will be very helpful as a future educator. I have also enjoyed getting to see how educators set up things on their end. I have never used Google suite or flipgrid, which goes to show how many learning tools are out there. I feel like technology has so many possible learning aids to make learning easier and more fun. My Mom is also a educator, and I feel she has influenced me so much on how I am today. I really admire her teaching style and attitude and hope to incorporate those skills into my future teaching style too! I loved your first post and keep up the good work!

  2. Hey Hope!! I love this post and felt like I got so many new insights of who you are, and wow what a resume. But do not feel intimidated with new technology, for staying open minded while combining what you know of your past experience will help you persevere in your future classroom!

  3. I also am in the same boat about having very little experience with technology. I love that you were able to have first-hand experience since your parents were educators. Once you become a barista, you'll have to make me something!

  4. I feel you in regards to not having a ton of experience with technology, I can do the basics of looking things up and like typing a word document, but too much beyond that and I'm waaaaaaayyyyy out of my depth! Hopefully this class will help fix that! :D
